Romania’s landscape is mainly defined by the striking and impressive Carpathian Mountains – but Romania is also home to forests, glaciers, volcanic landscapes, wetlands, marshes, and beaches.

In terms of European mountain ranges, the Alps usually catch most people’s attention, but don’t underestimate the Carpathian Mountains. This relatively young mountain range occupies over 1/3 of Romania’s landmass and is famous for housing the largest undisturbed forests in Europe. These mountains are also the backdrop for other incredible geographic features including caves, underground glaciers, mud volcanoes, and glacial lakes. 

Since the 1930s, Romania has recognized the importance of protecting and preserving its environments, home to rare and unique wildlife including 60% of Europe’s brown bear population.

Romania has 13 national parks, 12 nature parks, and two geo-parks, most of which exist in the Carpathian Mountains. 

Apart from the Carpathian Mountains, Romania also exists along the Danube Delta, Europe’s largest wetland, and has over 150 miles of coastline along the Black Sea. The Danube Delta alone houses over 300 species of birds among the countless other types of species that are attracted to the delta’s rivers and canals.

Historically, Romania has been seen as the “breadbasket of Europe” due to its economy being so heavily based on agriculture. In fact, the agriculture sector continues to employ 21% of the population. It wasn’t until the 1970s, during and after the communist era, that Romania began to invest in the industrial sector. Today, heavy industry and manufacturing are considered to be the backbone of Romania’s economy, employing 30% of the population. 

More recently, however, tourism in Romania has been booming! In 2019 alone, Romania welcomed 13.3 million people - the country’s all-time highest amount of visitors. Today, Romania’s economy is centered around tourism, and the services industry employs almost half of the country’s population. 

Like most countries, Romania suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic. Romania also continues to be impacted by the war in Ukraine. Aside from these external factors, the country is simultaneously experiencing internal challenges.

Despite the recent economic growth in 2022 and the boom in tourism, Romania continues to be one of the poorest countries in Europe, where 34% of the population is at risk of poverty. It also has an aging population, meaning that the majority of the population is no longer part of the workforce. This is due to the fact that there has been a massive migration of the younger, working population to Western Europe in search of job opportunities. This ‘brain drain’ continues to be a challenge for Romania as workers are what an economy needs to thrive and survive.

Tourism in Romania is more important now than ever before to help balance these economic strains. Bringing tourism back to the pre-pandemic levels will not only bring revenue into the country but also directly support local communities and businesses. Visiting Romania, and experiencing its natural beauty and cultural history, is one of the easiest ways to create a positive impact on the country. 

The official language in Romania is Romanian, a Latin language that consists of 31 characters. English, however, is widely spoken, making travel around Romania easy for many tourists. 

Apart from the ethnic Romanians, Romania also hosts several other ethnic groups. These include Hungarians in the Transylvania region, and the Romas, known to Romanians as gypsies. This cultural diversity comes from Romania’s long history of foreign occupations. Major empires occupied different regions, such as the Austro-Hungarians in the west, the Ottomans in the south, and the Russian Empire in the east. Each occupation left aspects of their cultures behind including slight dialect differences and noteworthy differences in architecture. Tourists should make a point of visiting the different geographic regions of Romania in order to experience all sides of its culture. 

Transylvania is one of the most iconic regions in Romania, known for its castles, gothic architecture, and medieval towns. In particular, Transylvania is home to Bran Castle, which is the inspiration behind Dracula’s castle as described by author Bram Stoker. These medieval Transylvanian villages have managed to preserve centuries-old traditions, music, and cuisines, sparking fascination and curiosity in many visitors. 

A large majority of the population, 78%, practice the Eastern Orthodox religion, a particular branch of Christianity. Compared to other European nations, Romanians are very religious and worship regularly. Another comparison with other European countries is that even though Romania joined the EU in 2007, they do not use the Euro. They use Lei (plural of Leu). This is important to keep in mind if you are planning on visiting, as euros are not often accepted in Romania. 


The public sector is responsible for the majority of Romania’s healthcare, including providing national health insurance. However, the healthcare situation in Romania is one of the weakest in Europe, despite the increase in spending. Romania has one of the lowest life expectancies in the EU and has faced several challenges including a lack of sufficient healthcare professionals. 

It’s recommended that travelers be in good health and have an average fitness level when visiting Romania, particularly if they’ll be exploring rural areas. Medical facilities may be few and far between, and may also be lacking equipment and highly trained personnel. For this reason, it’s also advisable to carry a basic first aid kit with you including sanitizing wipes and bandages.

Romania is considered to be one of the safest countries in Europe, which is great news for travelers. The United States Travel Advisory has it listed at Level 1 indicating it is completely safe to travel in and visit Romania.

Like most countries, Romania’s urban centers have increased reports of pickpocketing so this is the main crime that tourists should be on alert for. Bucharest, Romania’s capital city, is also its largest city providing a home for around 1.7 million people, while other notable cities frequented by visitors such as Cluj and Brasov have populations of around 680K and 550K residents, respectively.

Travelers should also remember that Romania is known for abundant wildlife in its forests and national parks. This is part of what makes visiting so exciting! Tourists should take the proper precautions while hiking or camping to avoid any unsafe run-ins with wildlife. 

Due to the regard for the Orthodox religion in Romania, LGBTQ travelers might at times feel uncomfortable in public in the smaller, more secluded villages where religious beliefs tend to be stronger. It is in these smaller communities that people are more conservative and are wary and hostile to the LGBTQ community. Although homosexuality is legal in Romania, same-sex marriage is still illegal, despite pushback from the LGBTQ community. While travelers may feel uncomfortable and should take precautions in smaller communities, in cities such as Bucharest and Cluj travelers can find the largest LGBTQ communities in the country.

Romania exists in a temperate climate, meaning that they have the privilege of experiencing 4 distinct seasons year round. This also means that you can visit Romania at any time of the year and have an exciting experience!

July and August are the warmest months, however, they still have mild temperatures of around 68°F to 82°F. In recent years, temperatures have risen, and in 2022, Bucharest saw temperatures as high as 102°F during the summer.

Summer is considered to be Romania’s high season, so do keep that in mind when booking your visit. Depending on your altitude, temperatures are consistently cooler in the mountains.

Autumn in Romania has been compared to New England where the trees and foliage burst into vibrant, warm colors. Temperatures are generally very pleasant for exploring Romania’s towns and scenery, and there are not normally high levels of rainfall.

Winter months bring snow and colder temperatures. As a result, Romania is a popular budget spot for skiers and snowboarders. There are plenty of other seasonal activities to enjoy as well, like snow-shoeing.

Spring typically comes in April, when the temperatures officially start to shift toward warmer weather. Romania can be absolutely lovely in the shoulder season for outdoor adventures.

Romania celebrates its National Day on December 1st, known as the Great Union Day, which commemorates when major provinces came together to form a united country. This is an exciting time to visit Romania! The country celebrates with fireworks, free concerts, and parades in most cities. Tourists also enjoy visiting Romania, or more specifically Transylvania, close to Halloween as people are excited to explore Dracula’s castle during the spooky season.

March 1st is Martisor Day (Mărțișor) which celebrates the arrival of the spring season. Traditionally, women are given small tokens of red and white yarn to give them good luck for the following year. This is when towns in Romania 'come back to life' after the winter season and tourists might find decorations in trees and around the town. 

The other holidays celebrated in Romania are typically religiously based. They follow the Orthodox calendar, so Good Friday, Easter, Whit Monday, and the Assumption of Mary are usually celebrated on different dates each year. 

Although Christmas is officially celebrated on December 25th, Romanians have a tradition to celebrate earlier in the month. December 6th is known as Saint Nicholas’s Day and children will line up their boots the evening before. If they were nice that year, their boots would be filled with sweets and small gifts, and if not, children would find wooden sticks in their boots. 

Sustainable Travel in Romania: Do’s and Don’ts 

When greeting new people, a handshake and eye contact will suffice! Do not be surprised if a man kisses a woman’s hand, it is a sign of respect. 

Be open to trying new foods when offered to you. Romanians are known for their hospitality and food!

Leaving a tip (roughly 10-15%) in a restaurant is normal, and not included in the bill. 

Take proper precautions when exploring Romania’s untouched wilderness to avoid close encounters with wildlife! Hiking and camping are popular sustainable travel activities in Romania but many animals call these forests and mountains their home. Do not disturb them.

Make noise while you’re hiking to avoid contact with wild bears.

Wear high socks, and long pants while hiking in tall grass to avoid ticks. 

Be wary of stray dogs and do not interact with herding dogs. Herding dogs can be often found when hiking and visiting small communities and they can be protective of their herd. Do not spook them or try to interact with them; let them do their job. 

Dress respectfully when visiting religious sites and monasteries. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered.

Do not rely on using euros and instead pay in Lei, the local currency. Be sure to have cash on you as some smaller shops or restaurants might not take credit cards. 

Avoid the topic of communism when speaking with locals. Foreign judgments can be unappreciated and taken the wrong way.  

Do not expect trains to run on time. They are known to be unreliable, so booking transportation directly at the train stations, where information will be the most up-to-date, is the best practice. 

Do not ask locals if they believe in vampires. This is a common mistake, and even though Romanians from the Middle Ages believed in the ‘living dead’, that doesn’t mean that locals today have the same beliefs. 

Do not confuse Romanians with the Roma. These are two different ethnic groups and confusing them might accidentally cause offense. 

Do not drink the water from local streams or lakes. Local cows, sheep, and other animals use it as a resource. If it is not indicated that it is safe to drink, avoid it to be safe; or use a verifiable water filtration system such as a water bottle with a built-in filter, a filtration straw, or water purifying tablets.

Do not venture into protected areas when visiting the Danube Delta. Stay in the designated spaces for tourists when enjoying these wetlands. 

5 Sustainable Travel Activities in Romania 

The Carpathian Mountains hold some of the most fascinating and exciting landmarks in Romania! While the Carpathians also touch the Ukraine, Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, Romania has access to the Eastern and Southern Carpathians, which represent about 50% of this mountain range and over 900km to explore. So, of course, tourists come to explore their natural beauty.

There are many opportunities for biking, hiking, caving, rock climbing, and other types of sustainable travel adventure activities in Romania’s mountains. The variety of choice can suit both differing interests and levels of ability. Remember to leave no trace and to stay on the trails in the National Parks!  

Part of Romania’s famous history is its awe-inspiring castles across the country and, more specifically, in Transylvania. The most popular is Bran Castle as it was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. Some other examples of beautiful medieval castles are Corvin Castle and Peles Castle, but there are plenty more to discover! Folklore aside, these castles are an excellent way to learn about the Romanian Royal Family and the long history of Saxons in Europe. 

You can take a step back in time and visit the beautiful Byzantine-painted monasteries in Bucovina. The walls depict biblical scenes from the 15th and 16th centuries and represent some of the most unique artwork in Europe. As a visitor, it is important to remember that these are religious spaces so men and women should have their knees and shoulders covered.

Romania has a long history with bears and, for the longest time, many bears have been kept captive in tiny cages as a tourist attraction. Since 2005, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești has been working to save these captive bears. You can visit the sanctuary today where bears now have access to 69 hectares of forest, pools, and proper food and medical care. 

You can do your part by taking a tour of the sanctuary, making a donation, or ‘adopting’ one of these furry friends. Also, be sure to check their website prior to visiting to find out more about what is and isn’t allowed during your visit. Please note that children younger than five cannot visit the sanctuary, so if you are interested in this sustainable travel activity in Romania, be sure to keep that in mind.

The Danube Delta, now classified as a UNESCO Heritage site, is a magnificent place to experience the country’s wetlands and marshes. This area is home to hundreds of species of birds and over 45 species of freshwater fish, making bird watching and fishing very popular activities here! 

However, the delta has experienced damage over the years so it's especially important to visit responsibly and with care. Romania is working hard to preserve the delta while keeping it open for people to enjoy. Sustainable Travel in Tanzania: Key Pillars 

When tourists dream of the African continent, they often imagine warm savannahs sprinkled with the most impressive wildlife diversity. These features are exactly what Tanzania is made of and is exactly why it is an extremely popular tourist destination.

Tanzania is one of the largest countries in East Africa. It houses the highest point in Africa (Mount Kilimanjaro) and shares access to some of the largest freshwater lakes on the continent (including Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika). This means that the highest and lowest points of Africa can be found in Tanzania, allowing the country to have some of the most unique ecosystems in the world.

These dramatic geographical features are part of the Great Rift Valley, formed by a historic separation of tectonic plates. Thanks to the widening of these plates, Tanzania now has the perfect landscape to attract iconic wildlife including big cats, giraffes, zebras, and elephants. Game animals are drawn to the woodlands, the plateaus, the grasslands, and the freshwater.

Around 1/3 of the country’s lands are under environmental protection.

Tanzania has 19 national parks (including Serengeti National Park - you might have heard of it) and 25 game reserves. 

Even though Tanzania shares a border with eight other countries, it also has a beautiful coastline. The archipelago of Zanzibar (Unguja in Kiswahili) has become quite popular for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Located in the Indian Ocean, you can explore the other side of the biodiversity in Tanzania - the marine life. It is one of the most famous dive sites in the world where marine enthusiasts are blessed with ancient coral reefs, shipwrecks, and over 500 species of fish. 

Tanzania was one of the only economies in the world not to fall into recession after COVID-19, and it continues to be one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Despite this impressive growth, Tanzania continues to have a high poverty rate of 27% as well as one of the highest population growth rates in the world. More than 70% of the population is found in rural regions and is left with little access to resources and healthcare. 

Tanzania’s economy is very dependent on agriculture. It is the country's main source of employment and exports. Most recently, farmers have been facing challenges due to climate change and financing.

Tourism is another essential part of the country’s economy, employing 10% of the population. Of course, COVID-19 impacted this industry; however, more recently, the ongoing war in Ukraine is impacting the economy. Eleven percent of the tourism in Tanzania previously came from either Russia or Ukraine. Despite this, the country earned the title of Africa’s Leading Destination in 2021. And, the industry saw a 57.7% increase in other tourist arrivals in 2022 compared to 2021.

Tanzania’s culture is made up of over 120 tribes, making it one of the most diverse in the world! One of the most well-known is the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe from Northern Tanzania and many parts of Kenya. They have a reputation for preserving their traditional practices and their iconic colorful clothing. In recent years, Maasai families have been relocated due to increased wildlife and environmental conservation, causing notable tensions.  

As a result of Tanzania’s cultural diversity, there are over 120 languages in Tanzania. The country has adopted Kiswahili (also known as Swahili) as its official language, and it is now being widely taught in schools along with English. As unifying as this is, it also means that many traditional practices and languages are starting to be lost. 

The majority of the population in Tanzania is either Christian or Muslim. In fact, Tanzania is known as being a very conservative country which tourists need to be aware of and respect while visiting. (Find a full list of do's and don’ts below!)

Sustainable Travel in Tanzania: Everything Else

Tanzania’s healthcare system is classified as weak despite funding from international sources. They are working towards universal healthcare but access to healthcare is very scarce. The country currently has a high child and maternal mortality rate and HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death. Pneumonia, tuberculosis, and malaria are other ailments of concern. 

Tourists should consult their doctor at least one month prior to traveling to Tanzania to ensure they receive appropriate vaccinations. According to the CDC, some vaccines may include malaria, typhoid, and yellow fever. 

Crime is something tourists should be aware of upon traveling to Tanzania. As Tanzania is a very conservative country, members of the LGBTQ community should be especially cautious. Several governments, including the United Kingdom and the United States, advise against travel to southern Tanzania towards the Mozambique border due to threats of terrorism. 

Tourists should mainly be aware of petty crimes such as bag snatching and theft. Visitors should not walk closely to roads as bag snatching from passing vehicles or motorbikes is quite common. (Find a full list of do’s and don’ts below!) 

There are two rainy seasons in Tanzania; the long rains and the short rains.

March to May: The long rains take place from March to May. This rainy season is often very heavy and it is quite humid and hot.

June to October: The dry season lasts from June until October. Precipitation and temperature vary based on altitude and location but generally, everything is a lot more comfortable during this time. This is typically considered to be the ‘ideal’ time to visit Tanzania.

November to February: The short rains take place from November through to December. During this time, the rains are much lighter and eventually taper into the dryer months of January and February. 

Many tourists plan their visit to Tanzania based on the Wildebeest migration. It is difficult to predict when exactly the migration will take place from year to year. However, it is understood that the Wildebeest migration takes place at the end of the long rains in May or June. To know more details, experts will share their predictions a year or two in advance which can easily be found online. 

Holidays in Tanzania are generally either religious or politically based. The country celebrates major Muslim and Christian holidays such as Easter, Christmas, Ramadan, and Eid. Tanzania National Day on December 9th celebrates Tanzania’s independence from British rule in 1961. Union Day on April 26th celebrates the union of Zanzibar and Tanganyika (now called Tanzania). Another important public holiday is Zanzibar Revolution Day which takes place on January 12th. This day remembers the revolution that led the way toward the country’s union. Sustainable Travel in Tanzania: Do’s and Don’ts

Always be aware of your surroundings. Be especially alert when in busy locations as this is where theft can take place.

Leave your passport and extra cash in the hotel safe that is bolted to the hotel’s furniture. 

Walk at least a long arm’s length away from the road, toward traffic. Remember, theft often takes place from vehicles passing by.

Carry a photocopy of your IDs and visas (and remember to leave the originals in the safe). 

Ensure windows and doors are locked at all times, especially at night. 

Make sure your knees and shoulders are covered in public and that your clothes aren’t too form-fitting (this applies to both men and women).  

Make sure you are properly vaccinated and consult your doctor at least one month prior to visiting.  

Greet those older than you by saying shikamoo. Community elders are highly respected and you can bow and hold your right elbow to show your respect while shaking their hand. 

Follow the rules of the National Parks and Reserves. Be sure to respect the animals: you are a visitor and this is their home. Leave nothing behind after your safari. 

Sustainable travel in Tanzania is not complete without managing your water consumption! Water is a rare and valued resource in Tanzania - do not waste it! Conserve water by taking shorter showers and reusing towels.

Bring a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter.

During your stay, turn off the lights and fans when not needed. Utilize natural light and ventilation instead!

Always choose eco-friendly accommodations and ethical tours! 

Do not use unlicensed taxis. Instead, arrange a taxi through your hotel or a reputable location.

Avoid leaving food or drink unattended.  

Avoid public displays of affection (applies to all types of couples, even newlyweds!) 

Avoid carrying a bag, and do not carry a lot of cash at one time.  

Do not jump straight into conversation, always take the time to greet someone properly. Greetings are very important in Tanzanian culture.  

Do not take photos of someone without their permission. If you plan on visiting a Maasai village, they will most likely expect a tip in exchange for a photo. 

Do not touch other people or food with your left hand - this is often the case in Muslim countries. The left hand is considered dirty and should be used for cleaning yourself. 

Do not drink or brush your teeth with tap water. You should also not eat ice, salad, raw veggies, or fruit as they could be rinsed with tap water. When in doubt, ASK! 

Do not bring plastic bags, the country has banned plastic bags and is working towards being plastic-free!

Avoid buying souvenirs that are made of animal skins or horns. Instead, you can purchase local textiles (such as a kanga - a traditional, colorful wrap), art, or ceramics.

Sustainable Travel in Tanzania: Activities

As you can probably guess, this is the most popular activity when visiting Tanzania. And rightfully so - going on a safari is a unique and exciting experience! People rush to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the chance to witness the “Big 5” (lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and African Buffaloes) in their natural habitat.

While Serengeti and Ngorongoro are quite well-known, one sustainable choice you can make is to visit lesser-known national parks. Manyara and Tarangire National Parks are also nearby and can be visited with generally fewer tourists than Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

You should absolutely never participate in off-roading, hunting, or poaching. Safaris should be responsible and ethical towards wildlife and their employees. This includes viewing game animals from a safe distance, not feeding or petting them, staying on main roads with your driver and guide, staying in eco-friendly lodges, and tipping your driver and guide fairly.

Patience is key on a safari! Many trips include game drives at different times of the day so you can see a variety of wildlife.

If you love the taste of adventure, trekking Kilimanjaro is a wonderful option for active travelers. Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits, making it one of the highest mountains in the world. It can often be accomplished in 6-7 days, though 8-10 day routes exist as well. Difficulty level is based on two variables: the route chosen, and the length of the trek (we can help you sort through options).

The Machame Route, also known as the Whisky Route, is the most popular path for visitors climbing Kili. This also means that it is usually the most crowded. However, there are many other routes you can take up the mountain: Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe, Marangu, Northern Circuit, and Crater Camp.

A sustainable travel choice you can make is to take one of these alternate routes when trekking Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. You will still earn great views, enjoy a low-carbon impact experience, and have a more serene journey on the trail.

All 6-7 day climb routes: Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe, and Marangu.

All 8-10 day climb routes: Lemosho, Northern Circuit, Crater Camp.

Conquering Kili should only be done with a guide and local porter. As always, make sure you leave no trace of your trek and book your tour with an ethical tour operator. Tanzania has taken great strides toward being a sustainable travel destination. As mentioned above, they have banned plastic bags and there are many initiatives towards assisting locals including the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project. Lonely Planet states: 

[Tanzania is] one of the top 10 countries in the world in terms of conservation, making it one of the best destinations for eco-tourism.

So, sustainable travel in Tanzania can be achieved in many ways, whether you’re looking for safaris and wildlife viewing, adventurous climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro, or immersive cultural and coastal tours in Zanzibar! 

We, as tourists, have the responsibility to engage and respect Tanzania’s sustainability efforts by leveraging ethical companies and tours. As we start to clear out the clutter and gear up for summer, many of us may be thinking about our travel plans and ways to make them more sustainable. But let’s face it, the world of eco-friendly travel products can be overwhelming. With so many options out there, it’s hard to know where to begin. That’s why we’re here to guide you through the world of sustainable travel products and offer some recommendations to help you travel more responsibly. 

When it comes to innovation, the travel industry may not always be at the forefront like, say, the tech industry. Many of the basics of eco-friendly travel have been around for a while – we all know about reusable water bottles and shopping bags, and hopefully, most of us already have at least one of each. But there are still many other areas where we can make sustainable swaps or upgrades. We’re even confident that there are a few eco-friendly travel products out there that might just surprise you!

So, let’s take a closer look at some of the cool and exciting products that are gaining popularity and making sustainable travel easier than ever before. We’ll delve into the details of each product and explain why they are environmentally friendly and why we think they deserve space in your luggage. But before we begin, let’s remember that the most sustainable option is always to use what you already have and reduce unnecessary consumption. 

Bringing your own set of utensils to avoid using plastic ones that are often provided with meals on the go is an easy win. When it comes to choosing reusable utensils for travel, there are several different materials to consider, including bamboo, stainless steel, silicone, and other materials. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and which one is better for the environment depends on a number of factors.

Bamboo Utensils: Bamboo utensils are made from a renewable resource and are biodegradable at the end of their life, making them generally considered to be the most sustainable option from an eco-friendly point of view. They are lightweight and easy to carry, so they are a popular choice for travelers. However, some bamboo utensils may be coated with synthetic materials, such as polyurethane, which can reduce their biodegradability. Additionally, bamboo utensils can sometimes absorb flavors or odors, which may be difficult to remove. One additional consideration is that bamboo knives will have limited sharpness – for example, it may be tough to cut a slice of medium or hard cheese. Opting for natural, organic, and biodegradable toiletries that are free of harsh chemicals and packaged in compostable or recyclable materials are a great way to up your sustainable travel game. A nice side benefit is that these eco-friendly travel products are typically also liquid-free, making them lightweight and super easy to pack without risking your liquid allowance.

Toothpaste and mouthwash tablets are popular eco-friendly alternatives to traditional toothpaste and mouthwash products. These concentrated tablets come in a small, compact form and can be used without water. They often come in plastic-free packaging, which reduces plastic waste. Because they’re dry tablets (about the size of a mint), you can conveniently pack the exact number of tablets you’ll need on your trip. So, use only what you need, and reduce waste and water usage – win-win!

Toothpaste Tablets: Toothpaste tablets are typically made from natural ingredients and come in a variety of flavors. To use them, you simply chew the tablet to create a paste, then brush your teeth as you would with traditional toothpaste. 

Mouthwash Tablets: Mouthwash tablets work in a similar way. You dissolve them in water to create a solution that you can swish around in your mouth to freshen your breath and kill bacteria. Like toothpaste tablets, mouthwash tablets come in a variety of flavors and are made from natural ingredients.

Some people may find that toothpaste and mouthwash tablets take some getting used to. Chewing the tablet to create a paste can feel different than squeezing traditional toothpaste out of a tube, and dissolving a tablet in water may require a little extra effort compared to using a pre-mixed mouthwash. Additionally, some toothpaste and mouthwash tablets may not contain fluoride, which can be a concern for those who want to ensure they are protecting their teeth against decay.


Shampoo and solid deodorant bars are two examples of solid toiletry products that are becoming increasingly popular as eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to traditional liquid products. Both typically use less packaging and have a lower carbon footprint. They are also often more compact and lightweight, making them convenient for travel or for use in smaller spaces. Additionally, many people find that these solid products last longer than their liquid counterparts, which can save money in the long run.

Solid Shampoo: Shampoo bars are solid bars of soap-like material that are specifically designed to be used as shampoo for hair. They typically contain natural ingredients like oils and herbs and are free from harsh chemicals and preservatives. To use a shampoo bar, you simply wet your hair and the bar, rub the bar onto your hair to create a lather, and then rinse it out.

Solid Deodorant: Solid deodorant bars are similar in concept, but are designed to be used as an alternative to traditional stick or spray deodorants. Like shampoo bars, they are typically made from natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals. For some solid deodorant bars, you may need to wet the bar before applying. OK – these are so cool! Soap sheets are an innovative alternative to traditional liquid or bar soap. They come in a small, compact sheet form, usually packaged in a reusable container, making them an ideal choice for eco-conscious travelers. To use a soap sheet, simply wet your hands or body and then take out one sheet. Rub the sheet between your hands or on your body to create a lather, then rinse off with water. Soap sheets are versatile and can be used for hand washing, body washing, and even for cleaning dishes. Watch how excited we were to try these!
From an environmental perspective, soap sheets are a great option as they typically come in minimal or zero packaging, reducing waste. They also don’t contain any plastic, which is a common component in many traditional liquid soap bottles. Soap sheets are often made with natural ingredients, making them biodegradable and safe for the environment.
From a traveler’s perspective, soap sheets are incredibly convenient. They’re lightweight and easy to pack, taking up minimal space in your luggage or backpack. They’re also TSA-approved, so you can bring them in your carry-on without any issues. Soap sheets are also great for camping or outdoor activities where access to running water may be limited.
One potential downside of soap sheets is that they may not lather as well as traditional soap. Some people may also find the texture of the sheets to be a little unusual compared to the feel of traditional soap. Additionally, soap sheets may not be as cost-effective as traditional soap, as you’ll need to purchase them more frequently due to their small size.


As far as eco-friendly travel products go, soap sheets are the most exciting new product we’ve discovered recently!

Liquid-free laundry detergent is a popular option for people who want to be able to do laundry on the go without carrying bulky liquid detergent bottles. One benefit of liquid-free laundry detergent is that it is more eco-friendly than traditional liquid detergent. These products tend to have a smaller carbon footprint, as they require less energy to manufacture and transport. They also tend to be more compact, which means they take up less space and are easier to transport. You mainly want to look for detergent sheets (or laundry strips).
Detergent sheets are thin sheets of laundry detergent that dissolve in water. They are lightweight, easy to pack, and designed to be used for one load of laundry on the go. To use these pre-measured detergent sheets, you simply add them to the washing machine with your clothes. Truly perfect for travel, it’s easy to carry a few of these with you and wash clothes in a sink or in a traditional machine if you find one along your journey.
It’s important to note that not all liquid-free laundry detergents are created equal. Some may not be as effective at cleaning clothes as traditional liquid detergent, especially for heavily soiled items. Additionally, some liquid-free options may contain harsh chemicals or fragrances that can be irritating to some people. Double-check that you buy an eco-friendly version that will work for you.

Choosing a reef-safe and biodegradable sunscreen that is free of chemicals that can harm marine life is a good way to go for vacations in the sun. Reef-safe sunscreens are designed to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays without causing damage to coral reefs and other marine life. Traditional sunscreens can contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate (types of chemical UV filters), which have been shown to harm coral reefs and other marine organisms. Let there be no confusion: sunscreen is not the leading cause of damage to coral reefs and life below the sea! But, every bit we can do as individual travelers still help.
Eco-friendly reef-safe sunscreens typically use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide broad-spectrum sun protection. These ingredients are not harmful to coral reefs and other marine life, and they are often more effective at protecting your skin from the sun than traditional chemical sunscreens. In addition to using mineral-based ingredients, many eco-friendly reef-safe sunscreens are also free from other harmful chemicals like parabens and phthalates. They are often formulated with natural ingredients like aloe vera and coconut oil, which can help to soothe and moisturize your skin.
Another resource you can use for choosing eco-friendly reef-safe sunscreen is the Environmental Working Group’s sunscreen guide. 

While you may have heard of reef-safe sunscreen before, eco-friendly insect repellent is a bit more niche. Eco-friendly insect repellent is free of harmful chemicals and instead uses natural ingredients like essential oils and plant-based extracts to keep insects at bay. Some common natural insect repellents include citronella, peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus.
One benefit of using eco-friendly insect repellents is that they are generally safer for the environment and for people. They are less likely to cause skin irritation and are free from harsh chemicals like DEET, which can be harmful to aquatic life and ecosystems. Additionally, many eco-friendly insect repellents come in recyclable or biodegradable packaging, further reducing their environmental impact. Here’s a DEET-free option with lemon and eucalyptus.

They are made from a blend of polyester and nylon fibers that are woven together to create a soft, durable material.
One of the benefits of microfiber towels is that they are highly absorbent. They can hold up to seven times their weight in water, making them a great choice for drying off after a swim or shower. They are also quick-drying, which can help prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Another benefit of microfiber towels is that they are generally more durable than cotton towels. They are less likely to fray or tear, and they can withstand many washes without losing their softness or absorbency. They are also often lighter and more compact than cotton towels, which makes them a great choice for travel or outdoor activities.
However, there are some potential downsides to using microfiber towels. One issue is that they can shed microfibers when washed, which can contribute to plastic pollution in the environment. Additionally, some people find that microfiber towels are not as soft as cotton towels, which can be a concern for those with sensitive skin. To mitigate the shedding of microfibers, it’s important to wash microfiber towels separately from other clothing items and to avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, which can cause the fibers to become clogged and less effective.
It’s also worth noting that some microfiber towels are made from recycled materials or use more sustainable production methods, so it’s worth checking the label to see if the towel you are considering has any eco-friendly certifications or attributes. When you think of eco-friendly travel products, a solar-powered charger might not be at the top of your mind. But, solar-powered chargers are a popular and sustainable option for charging electronic devices, especially when traveling. Investing in a solar-powered charger can reduce the need to use energy from non-renewable sources, like fossil fuels, while you’re on the go. Here are some of the pros and cons of using a solar-powered charger:

Pros:
-Renewable Energy: Solar-powered chargers rely on the sun to generate power, which is a renewable and sustainable source of energy.
-Portability: Solar-powered chargers are typically small and lightweight, making them easy to carry with you on the go. They can be a convenient option for outdoor activities or when traveling to remote areas without access to electricity.
-Durability: Solar-powered chargers are typically designed to be durable and can withstand extreme weather conditions, making them a good option for outdoor activities and adventure travel.
-Cost-Effective: While the initial cost of a solar-powered charger may be higher than a traditional charger, over time, using a solar-powered charger can save you money on your electricity bills if you’re using them at home in addition to your travels.

Cons:

Overall, solar-powered chargers can be a great option for charging electronic devices when traveling, especially for those who are looking for an eco-friendly and sustainable option. However, it’s important to consider the weather conditions and the capacity of the charger before making a purchase.

Bringing your own refillable water bottle instead of buying single-use plastic bottles is something everybody should be doing by now. There are tons of different versions out there now, such as this bottle that conveniently collapses down and stands sturdy when filled with water.

Going one step beyond a reusable water bottle, a portable water filter can be useful in areas where clean drinking water may not be readily available. Portable water filters are an excellent way to ensure that you have access to clean drinking water while traveling, camping, or during emergency situations. There are several different types of portable water filters available, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Here are some of the most common types:

Straw Filters: These are small, lightweight filters that you can drink directly from. You simply insert one end of the straw into the water source and suck the water through the filter. Straw filters are great for hiking or other outdoor activities, as they are very portable and easy to use.

Gravity Filters: These filters use gravity to move water through the filter. You simply fill the top of the filter with water and let it flow through to the bottom, where the clean water is collected. Gravity filters are often used for group camping trips or for emergency situations, as they can filter large amounts of water at once.

Pump Filters: These filters use a hand pump to move water through the filter. You insert a hose into the water source and use the pump to force the water through the filter. Pump filters are great for situations where you need to filter large amounts of water quickly, but they can be heavier and more cumbersome to use than other types of filters.

UV Filters: These filters use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses in the water. You simply immerse the filter in the water and turn it on. UV filters are very effective at killing microorganisms, but they do require batteries or a power source to work.

When choosing a portable water filter, it’s important to consider the type of water you will be filtering, the amount of water you need to filter, and how portable and easy to use the filter needs to be. Let’s talk about diversity in travel. Overwhelmingly, media images of travelers are white, cis couples and families. Put simply: that doesn’t fairly represent the travel market. Travelers of all colors, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations and preferences are looking to explore the world. They have the means to do so, and just like many travelers, will spend months dreaming and planning. Unlike many (white, cis) travelers though, travelers from underrepresented or marginalized groups also research topics such as physical safety and whether or not it’s OK to show physical affection to their partner in public.

We attended the International Women in Travel and Tourism Forum in London in June 2022. The sold-out conference brought together women, men, and nonbinary humans who shared anecdotes of vulnerability, strength, pride, and humor. Bubbling with positivity, the panels featured inspiring speakers who gave poignant advice on building a more diverse and inclusive travel and tourism industry. Words of wisdom interwove across four themes:

Changing the tourism industry for the better is all of our responsibility: travelers and travel companies, CEOs and new graduates, women, male allies, and every gender and skin color in between. There is much to be done. Below, we recap some of the most meaningful resources and initiatives dedicated to making the travel industry more diverse and inclusive.

If yes, you will have seen results flooded with references to “all-inclusive resorts,” “all-inclusive package holidays,” “best all-inclusive travel deals,” etc. While this is likely the information travelers are looking for, it highlights how far we have to go to shift travelers and companies toward thinking of and using the word ‘inclusive’ to mean ‘inclusive of all travelers’ – not just inclusive of drinks at the swim-up bar.)
