Papua New Guinea is an island nation in Oceania, just north of Australia, and perhaps our most off-the-beaten-track destination! It shares a land border with Indonesia and is surrounded by the Coral, Bismarck, and Solomon Seas. Papua New Guinea is a rare and unique country with deep-rooted Indigenous traditions and over 800 languages spoken

The country’s rugged interior is cloaked in dense rainforest, steep valleys, and dramatic ridges, creating a paradise of profound natural beauty. Among its most iconic journeys is the Kokoda Track, a historic World War II trail that winds through the Owen Stanley Range and offers a powerful mix of physical challenge, cultural immersion, and historical significance.

Best Time to Visit Papua New Guinea

To get the most out of visiting one of the least-exlored corners of the world, we recommend visiting during the dry season from May to September, when conditions are more favorable for walking. Days are generally warm and humid, with average daytime temperatures between 75–85°F (24–29°C) and cooler nights in higher elevations. The wet season, from November to March, brings heavy rain, muddy trails, and increased difficulty, so for safety and comfort, we don't recommend the Kokoda Track during this season. April and October are shoulder months, which may affect trekking conditions.

Sustainable Package Trips in Papua New Guinea

We offer privately guided trekking packages along the historic Kokoda Track with a locally-owned and Indigenous-owned partner committed to community-based tourism. These immersive adventures are designed to present trekkers with a challenging and rewarding physical opportunity, educate travelers about the stories of local people, take guests beyond the trail to see firsthand what local village life is like, and break the cycle of poverty for local porters and guides. Few travel experiences offer such a powerful combination of nature, history, and human connection.

How to Get to Papua New Guinea

Most international travelers arrive via Port Moresby (POM), the capital, with flights from Australia, Singapore, or the Philippines. You'll then take a short, scenic, chartered flight closer to the Kokoda Track trailhead.
